How post surgery rehabilitation is done?
After surgery, the operated area is swollen, red and can be painful. This is a normal reaction to operative procedures used by surgeons. There’s then a gradual return to the normal functioning which will be enhanced by physiotherapy treatments. Each surgery and each patients are different so the physiotherapist will develop a training program, tailored to the patient’s condition, taking into account the operated area and the condition of the tissues operated.
Our Post operative physiotherapy treatment will focus on five important steps
- To reduce the pain and the oedema as much as possible using massage, manual lymphatic drainage and cold therapy
- To increase the mobility of the joints by using passive then active mobilisation
- To regain the flexibility of the joints, muscles and tendons
- To retrain the muscles in order to gain strength and provide stability to the affected joint.
- To regain the proprioception of the joints by retraining the sensitive receptors contained in the joints to avoid any future injury.
Depending on the type of operation and the response from the patient’s body, the length of the treatment may differ but the success is assured.
More than post operative physio rehabilitation
The physiotherapist role is not only about rehabilitation, it also is about educating the person on daily-life activities to prevent any future injury and to raise up confidence in using the affected joins on a daily basis.
And for patient who wish to go further with their rehabilitation, we also have a personal trainer and a pilates instructor who can help them going safely back to sport.
